Almost everyone can cook a chili. They are so supremely easy that even my dog, with his paws tied behind his back and next door’s cat doing a provocative dance just within his line of sight, could throw one together.
Beans have come a long way since they burst onto the scene as poverty-stricken students’ main fare. Back when I was packing up to go to university (aka college – hello US readers!) almost every student cookbook that came my way featured many, many bean dishes.
Doesn’t matter if it’s the early hours of the morning, doesn’t matter if my belly’s full (seriously, it’s like an endless, unquenchable black hole in there) and it doesn’t matter if it’s sub-zero temperatures, whenever I’m in Toronto I make a beeline for the nearest shawarma shop.
