Whole30 BBQ Sauce

use as a dip, or a basting sauce

If anyone out there knows of a good, clean, natural, non-toxic fly repellent, I’d be very glad to hear it.

Hubs and I were BBQ-ing some ribs last weekend and the cloud of flies that showed up was monstrous. Like a biblical plague.

It almost ruined the very, very, very tasty spare ribs that my genius husband artfully cooked until they were falling-off-the-bone delicious.

Of course, I take some of the credit because the BBQ sauce that we slathered on those ribs was my own invention.

There are plenty of paleo/primal BBQ sauce recipes out there…but not so many that are Whole30 compliant.

So I found this one, and tweaked it. Both myself and Hubs (who is not doing the Whole30 and therefore is my benchmark in these things) loved it.

Whole30 BBQ Sauce (makes about 3 cups)

  • 6 oz tomato paste
  • 3 tbsps ghee, softened
  • 3 tbsps hot sauce
  • 4 tbsps fresh orange juice
  • 6 tbsps apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup distilled water
  • 2 tsps yellow mustard
  • 1/2 tsp allspice
  • 1/2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tsps chili powder
  • 1 1/2 tsps paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic salt
  1. Whisk everything together until well combined. Slather on your meat. Eat (preferably with your fingers for the true primal experience).

  1. The sauce does sound amazing. One thing that works for flies and mosquitoes is a fan! They don’t like flying into the breeze and will avoid the area.

  4. Oh! This sounds great with your rib recipe. Thank you! I start the Whole30 on November 1. A couple of questions, if you don’t mind: 1) what kind of hot sauce do you use that is Whole30 compliant, and 2) why distilled water? Will filtered water work just as well?

    • Hi Cindy. Yep, filtered water is fine (I prefer distilled but water is water). Secondly, I use Original Louisiana hot sauce. It’s not organic but its ingredients list is the purest I can find – just peppers, vinegar and salt! I’m sure there are other options out there that are still Whole30 compliant though…it’s all about checking the labels. Good luck for your Whole30 🙂
