The Most Amazing ‘Fitspiration’ Ever

It’s possible I’m behind the crowd here (despite spending an unhealthy amount of time on the internet, trends do pass me by occasionally) but I wanted to take some time today to talk about two wonderful websites that had me rapt at the keyboard this week.

Jordan Matter is a New York photographer. In 2012, Matter published a beautiful book called Dancers Among Us which documented dancers striking poses in every day situations.

this is one of my favourites...even baby wants in on the action!

If you have the time (lots of time, this stuff is compelling) check out the slideshow.

Matter followed up Dancers Among Us with Athletes Among Us which, as you’d expect, is athletes doing their thing (and looking amazing while doing it).

these people are 'acro yoga specialists' apparently. No idea what that is, but they make it look cool

I’m kinda in love.

I also love that dress

Forget the photos of impossibly tiny girls with washboard abs over which is pasted a trite phrase, Matter’s photos are true fitspiration – muscular torsos doing what they’ve been trained to do. It’s testament to what the human body can achieve and extremely motivating for someone like me who finds it a struggle to do a decent back bend.

there's even a crossfitter in the bunch!

I also cannot lift adult women over my head

For me, these photos not only capture the pleasure of exercise but how great it is to simply be alive, to be vital and to be present.

I could look at them for hours..and then go to the gym.

Weigh in: Are you familiar with Matter’s work? What do you think of them? Which do you prefer Dancers or Athletes? Do you find these photos inspiring?
